1. The Merchant of Venice
The Merchant of Venice is a Micheal Radford’s movie, it was released in 2004, and it is set in Venice during the 14th Century. It’s a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece The Merchant of Venice and some famous actors can be seen in this movie, for example Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons. Parts of the movie were shot in ancient villas in the provinces of Vicenza and Venice, and of course also in the city of Venice, precisely in the Benedictine monastery on San Giorgio Maggiore island.
Casanova is one of the most famous Venetians in the world, and in 2005 director Lasse Hallstrom decided to take its adventures on the big screen. He chose Heath Ledger to play this famous seducer. In this film you can see important monuments and attraction of Venice, such as the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, Palazzo Sorano Van Axel, St. Mark’s Square and the omnipresent Grand Canal.
3. 007 – Casino Royal
Casino Royal, one of the movies of 007 saga, was shot in many different countries, some of them are Czech Republic, Madagascar, the Bahamas, Montenegro and of course Italy, in Venice. On the big screen you can see Sotoportego dell’Erbaria, located a few steps from the Rialto Bridge, and all the palaces on the Grand Canal.
Iago is an Italian movie released in 2009 and it is a modern transposition of Shakespeare’s Otello. It was directed by Volfagango De Biasi and it involved famous italian actors Nicolas Vaporidis and Laura Chiatti. In this film you can see St. Mark’s Square, other squares around the city (called in venetian campi), precisely campo San Giacomo and campo Santa Maria Formosa, and also the Arsenal of Venice.
5. The Tourist
The Tourist is a thriller movie. Released in 2010 and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, it boasts an international cast: Angelina Jolie, Jonny Depp, Christian De Sica and Neri Mare are all present in this film. Probably this is one of the most famous movies set in Venice, at least among recent movies. It was partially shot in Paris, but Venice is the real main character here. Just to name a few, in the movie you can se Santa Lucia Railway Station, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Arsenal, the Marciana Library and Fondaco dei Turchi.
